Testimonials

Just a brief note to say how delighted I am with the Melanie (9.6 sqm) Log Cabin I bought from you. Your service and price were superb and Greg and Craig came at 9am on Tuesday and worked right through until 8pm to build it.

They did an excellent job and did not stop all day. Greg advised that I should paint the door and windows a different colour as otherwise the green painted log cabin would be ‘lost’ in the garden and I took their advice. I used two different colours of Butinox No. 3 and the result is absolutely incredible. Many thanks once again. One hugely satisfied customer.

Sandy

The delivery lorry arrived about eleven o’clock and the driver duly unloaded two very large packages. At eleven thirty my neighbour and I began to investigate these well protected packages.

Just after three o’clock that afternoon, two self satisfied men were enjoying a well deserved beverage whilst admiring the 4.5 by 3.5 meter cabin which was now completed up to roof purling level.

The construction of the cabin was so logical and easy, just like assembling ‘Lego blocks’ only heavier.

We absolutely love our Summer House – we can seat 16 people inside it, it stays warm long after the sun has gone down and it is particularly special as we run a B&B, so we can escape into it, invite all our friends to parties in it and now, we have installed electricity so can have lighting, heat and music as and when needed. It also provides a really big area to store all our garden furniture during the winter months.

We would absolutely recommend you to anyone considering buying one. Many thanks.

A Nordic Tradition, Reimagined for Modern Living

Nordic BBQ huts have a rich heritage rooted in the traditions of outdoor living across Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Known locally as grillikota, these cabins were originally designed to make open-fire cooking possible in the harshest climates.

Today, these huts have evolved into versatile garden structures that blend tradition with modern comfort. Whether used for winter grilling, midsummer parties, or cozy evenings with family, they offer a level of atmosphere and warmth that's hard to match. The enclosed layout, often centred around a grill or fire feature, creates a naturally social space where people can gather, cook, and dine together.

Another reason BBQ huts have become popular in the UK is their ability to turn unpredictable weather into an opportunity rather than an obstacle. Rain or snow doesn’t mean the end of outdoor entertaining. Instead, it becomes part of the charm. With the right setup, the hut can also be used as a workspace, reading nook, or quiet garden escape, offering additional space beyond outdoor cooking.

Frequently Asked Questions: BBQ Huts

What is a Nordic Barbeque Hut?

A Nordic BBQ hut (sometimes referred to as a "grillikota" in Finland) is a small, wooden, hexagonal or octagonal hut traditionally used in Nordic countries for grilling and outdoor gatherings, especially during colder months.

These huts are designed to provide a cozy and functional space for enjoying barbecues year-round, regardless of the weather.

A built-in central BBQ grill or fire pit is the hut's centerpiece, often with a chimney or ventilation system to direct smoke outside. Surrounding seating or table fitted inside allows guests to gather around the grill, making it ideal for hosting a barbecue party.

What's the Difference Between a BBQ Hut and a BBQ Lodge?

The main difference between a BBQ hut and a BBQ lodge lies in their size, features, and intended use.

BBQ Hut: A BBQ hut or BBQ cabin is typically smaller, often hexagonal or octagonal in shape, and designed for intimate gatherings. It includes a central grill or fire pit, seating around the grill, and is perfect for cozy outdoor entertainment with a small group. Grill cabins are ideal for creating a warm and inviting space for year-round barbecues in your garden or outdoor area.

BBQ Lodge: A BBQ lodge or Grill House is a larger structure, offering more space for hosting bigger groups or adding extra features like dining tables or sleeping benches. While it also includes a central grill or fire pit, barbecue lodges are more versatile, making it suitable for larger events, extended stays, or as a multi-purpose space for outdoor entertainment and relaxation.

Both options provide excellent shelter and comfort for enjoying a barbecue party or the fresh air, but a BBQ lodge offers greater flexibility and space for those who need it.

Why Choose a Nordic Barbecue Hut?

  •  All-Weather Grilling: Enjoy barbecues and gatherings regardless of the season.
  • Social Experience: Encourages communal dining and connection in a unique, enclosed space.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Adds a rustic and charming touch to gardens or areas.- Durability: Built to endure harsh weather, it is a long-lasting addition to a property.
  • The wall thickness of 44mm ensures excellent stability and comfort year-round.

Can Palmako BBQ Huts Be Used Year-Round?

Yes, barbecue huts, also called grill cabins or BBQ cabins, are designed for year-round use, offering comfort in snowy, rainy, or windy conditions.

They often feature windows and doors that can be opened for ventilation during warmer months or closed to retain warmth in colder weather. Rubber and silicone seals around doors and double-glazed windows provide a draught-free interior for enhanced comfort.

Additionally, ground joists are moisture-resistant due to impregnation, ensuring durability and effective natural floor insulation for all seasons.

Do BBQ huts stay warm in winter?

Yes, BBQ huts are designed to remain comfortable even during colder months. The cabin walls provide natural insulation, helping to retain heat inside the structure. When used with a grill or fire feature, the enclosed space warms up efficiently, making it suitable for use during chilly evenings and throughout the winter season.

How many people can fit inside a BBQ hut?

The number of people a BBQ hut can accommodate depends on its size and layout. Available in different sizes, including compact hexagonal and larger octagonal designs, these huts can typically seat around 6 to 10 people comfortably.

Smaller models (around 8–9m²) are well suited to family use, seating around 6 people, while larger cabins (around 11m² and above) can accommodate bigger social gatherings, typically seating 8–10 people. The central layout allows seating around the grill area, making it easy for guests to gather, cook, and dine together.

Do Palmako’s Eva barbecue huts include a BBQ grill?

Our garden BBQ huts do not include a grill as standard. The Eva barbecue huts from Palmako are designed to be versatile spaces, allowing you to customise the hut to suit your needs. You can choose your preferred grill, cooking platform and seating arrangement to create the ideal setup, whether you're hosting a garden party or enjoying time with family and friends.

Are BBQ huts safe to use with a fire inside?

Yes, BBQ huts are designed to be safely used with a fire when installed and used correctly.

Most models are built to accommodate an inside grill or fire feature, with ventilation systems that allow smoke to exit the structure. An adjustable chimney helps control airflow and directs smoke safely outside, reducing buildup inside the hut. As with any open-fire setup, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and ensure proper ventilation at all times.

Are Palmako’s Barbeque Huts DIY-Friendly?

Yes, Palmako’s barbecue huts are designed to be easily assembled. They are supplied with detailed instructions, pre-assembled roof elements, all necessary mounting hardware, and clearly organised separate components, making the process manageable even for those with basic DIY skills.

For customers seeking a hassle-free experience, Palmako also offers a professional installation service for all their cabins, ensuring a smooth and efficient setup process.

What base is required for a BBQ hut?

A BBQ hut should be installed on a stable, level base to ensure proper support and long-term performance.

Suitable options include concrete slabs, paving stones, or a properly prepared timber foundation. The base should be able to handle different weather conditions, helping to prevent movement or moisture issues over time.

A solid foundation is especially important for timber structures, as it helps protect the wood and maintain the overall stability of the hut.

How do you maintain a wooden BBQ hut?

Maintaining a wooden BBQ hut is straightforward and helps extend its lifespan. Regularly treating the timber protects it from moisture and helps preserve its appearance over time. It’s also important to check the roof covering, especially if using roof shingles, to ensure everything remains secure and weatherproof. Periodically inspecting areas such as the roof panels and base will help keep the structure in good condition throughout the year.

How long does a wooden BBQ hut last?

A wooden BBQ hut can last for many years when properly maintained.

High-quality materials ensure these structures are built to handle outdoor conditions and regular use. Timber is a natural material, so its lifespan depends on factors such as treatment, exposure, and ongoing care. With regular maintenance and proper installation, a BBQ hut can remain a durable and reliable feature in your garden for many years to come.

What Roof Covering Would You Recommend?

Black roof shingles are a popular and highly recommended choice. They come in individual sheets and are nailed to the roof, providing a more refined and durable finish. Shingles are especially suited for more expensive or premium models, as they enhance the overall aesthetic and complement the design better than traditional roofing felt.

Shingles are available as an optional extra, making it easy to upgrade your roof covering for a long-lasting and visually appealing solution.
