Barrel Saunas

A barrel sauna is a practical and aesthetic way to bring Scandinavian-style wellness into your garden. Palmako barrel saunas are made from slow-grown Nordic spruce with solid timber walls, providing durability and effective natural insulation for year-round outdoor use.

Most models comfortably accommodate up to four people, making them ideal for couples, families or small social gatherings. The curved barrel shape supports even heat circulation, allowing warm air to rise and move naturally around the interior. This helps the sauna heat up efficiently, reduces cold spots and supports more consistent temperatures during use.

Each model is supplied as a flat-pack kit with detailed assembly instructions, and professional installation is available if preferred. Heaters are sold separately, allowing you to choose the system that best suits your setup and usage needs.

Testimonials

Just a brief note to say how delighted I am with the Melanie (9.6 sqm) Log Cabin I bought from you. Your service and price were superb and Greg and Craig came at 9am on Tuesday and worked right through until 8pm to build it.

They did an excellent job and did not stop all day. Greg advised that I should paint the door and windows a different colour as otherwise the green painted log cabin would be ‘lost’ in the garden and I took their advice. I used two different colours of Butinox No. 3 and the result is absolutely incredible. Many thanks once again. One hugely satisfied customer.

The delivery lorry arrived about eleven o’clock and the driver duly unloaded two very large packages. At eleven thirty my neighbour and I began to investigate these well protected packages.

Just after three o’clock that afternoon, two self satisfied men were enjoying a well deserved beverage whilst admiring the 4.5 by 3.5 meter cabin which was now completed up to roof purling level.

The construction of the cabin was so logical and easy, just like assembling ‘Lego blocks’ only heavier.

We absolutely love our Summer House – we can seat 16 people inside it, it stays warm long after the sun has gone down and it is particularly special as we run a B&B, so we can escape into it, invite all our friends to parties in it and now, we have installed electricity so can have lighting, heat and music as and when needed. It also provides a really big area to store all our garden furniture during the winter months.

We would absolutely recommend you to anyone considering buying one. Many thanks.

Frequently Asked Questions - Outdoor barrel saunas

How many people can fit in a barrel sauna?

Many models comfortably accommodate up to four people, seated along the internal sauna bench layout. Smaller models are suited to two users, making them ideal for more compact spaces. Always check the internal dimensions on each product page to ensure the layout meets your needs.

Do I need planning permission for a barrel sauna in the UK?

In most cases, you don’t need planning permission for a barrel sauna in the UK, as it’s usually classed as a garden outbuilding under permitted development rules. This generally applies as long as the sauna is for personal use, is single-storey, stays within height limits, and isn’t placed in front of the house. You may need permission if your property is listed, in a conservation area, or has restricted development rights, so it’s always sensible to check with your local council before installation.

What type of heater can I use with a barrel sauna?

Palmako barrel saunas are compatible with electric sauna heaters and, where specified, can also support a wood-fired sauna setup. Electric heaters offer convenience and precise control, allowing you to adjust the desired temperature easily. Wood-fired options provide a more traditional sauna experience. Heaters are sold separately, giving you flexibility to choose the system that best suits your setup.

How long does it take to heat up a barrel sauna?

Heating time depends on the heater type, outdoor temperature and sauna size. On average, an electric heater may take 30-45 minutes before the sauna reaches operating temperature. The cylindrical design supports even heat distribution, helping deliver fast heat-up times and consistent performance once heated. Wood-fired heating times vary depending on airflow and fire management.

How difficult is it to install a barrel sauna?

Barrel sauna kits are supplied flat-packed with detailed assembly instructions. With two people and basic tools, models can be assembled as a DIY project. The rounded roof design is part of the structural build and is assembled step-by-step during installation. Professional installation is available if you prefer not to build it yourself.

Do barrel saunas require a foundation?

Yes. A solid, flat, and level foundation is required for the correct installation and long-term performance of a barrel sauna. The base should be raised at least 5 cm above ground and properly supported, with adequate ventilation underneath.

Common foundation options include screw foundations, strip or spot (pile) foundations, concrete or paving slabs, and cast concrete slab bases. The base frame must be completely level to ensure trouble-free installation.

Are barrel saunas suitable for year-round use?

Yes. When installed correctly and used with a suitable heater, barrel saunas are suitable for year-round use. Solid timber wall construction helps retain heat effectively, even during colder months, allowing comfortable sauna use in all seasons.

How much does it cost to run a barrel sauna?

Running costs depend on the heater type and frequency of use. Electric heaters typically offer predictable energy consumption, while wood-burning stoves depend on firewood costs. For most users, occasional to regular sauna sessions result in moderate operating costs.

How long does a timber barrel sauna last?

With proper installation, regular timber treatment and routine maintenance, a high-quality Nordic spruce barrel sauna can last for many years. Ongoing care helps protect the timber from moisture and weather exposure.

Do barrel saunas have ventilation?

Yes. Proper airflow is important for safe and comfortable sauna use. Barrel sauna designs include ventilation features to allow fresh air intake and airflow during heating. Always follow the heater manufacturer's guidance for ventilation setup.

What is the difference between a barrel sauna and a cabin sauna?

An outdoor barrel sauna features a cylindrical shape that supports efficient heat circulation and typically has a more compact footprint. Cabin-style saunas have vertical walls and often offer more interior space or additional rooms. The right choice depends on available garden space, seating capacity and personal preference.

What optional extras are available with a barrel sauna?

Palmako barrel sauna kits include high-quality roof shingles at no additional charge, helping protect the sauna’s exterior from rain and improving long-term weather resistance. Heaters are sold separately, allowing you to choose from compatible heating options based on your preferred setup and usage needs.

As the timber is supplied untreated, applying suitable wood treatments after installation is essential to protect the structure and maintain its appearance. Professional installation is also available as an optional service if you prefer to avoid a potentially time-consuming DIY build.

What are the benefits of installing a barrel sauna at home?

Regular sauna use may help reduce muscle tension, improve circulation and support post-exercise recovery. Many users also find that heat exposure promotes relaxation, reduces stress levels and supports better sleep quality over time. Sweating during sauna sessions can also support skin health by helping open pores and cleanse the skin.

Many homeowners choose a barrel sauna as a perfect addition to their garden or patio, creating a private, serene escape without leaving home. Built from durable materials, Palmako barrel saunas are designed to perform reliably in outdoor conditions, even in exposed garden settings.
